MALE REJUVENATION
Q&A
P-Shot:
Do I need P-Shot?
Platelet Rich Plasma (PRP) is used to treat sexual dysfunction in men. The evidence is emerging and there is paucity of data but the studies that exist show that it can be used to treat problems like maintaining erection. It is not ideal for increase the length or girth of the penis.
What is Platelet Rich Plasma?
Platelet Rich Plasma (PRP) is an injection treatment that uses the components of a person’s own blood to stimulate hair growth. Platelets are very small cells in your blood that are involved in the clotting process. When PRP is injected into the damaged area it causes a mild inflammation that triggers the healing cascade. As the platelets organize in the tissue they release a number of enzymes to promote healing and restoration of tissue. They have also been shown anecdotally to promote hair growth.
How is Platelet Plasma produced?
A small quantity of blood (25cc‐55cc) is drawn from the patient into a syringe. This is a relatively small amount compared to blood donation which removes approximately 500cc. The blood is spun in a special centrifuge (according to standard Harvest Techniques) to separate its components (Red Blood Cells, Platelet Rich Plasma, and Plasma). The platelet rich plasma is separated from the rest of the blood and then activated with a small amount of calcium to allow the release of growth factors from the platelets which in turn amplifies the growth response.
How does PRP work?
Platelets harbour growth factors which promote healing and regeneration. There are over 40 growth factors that play a role in bio regeneration of the tissues. The concept is that platelets release the growth factors and harness the growth potential of the tissue that is injected into. Some studies claim recruitment of stem cells after injection of platelets. Currently, there is lack of evidence on the exact mechanism but it is plausible that more than one mechanism is responsible for the results.
How many treatments do I need?
Though there is no clear evidence for P-Shot, traditionally studies on PRP have done 3 treatments 4-6 weeks apart and 6 monthly maintenance. If there is a very good response with the first one and is adequate, I don’t see a point doing the rest and probably worth going straight to the maintenance treatment.
What are the risks?
Bruising and swelling is common after the injection.
What is the down time?
We advise you not be sexually active for 48 hours after the injection to prevent infection. Pls avoid taking paracetamol or neurofen as it reduces the effect of the platelets.
Does it make my Penis bigger?
Some advocate using PRP to increase the length of the penis but my view is this is a myth and being wrongly advertised.
